MINUTES
06 APRIL 2010
Meeting called to order by Commandant Bob Richardson. Members in attendance were James Lewis, Jean Lewis, Ira Sewell, Gerald Mendoza, Mary Bryant, James Harvey, Art Vega, Mary Denton, Guy Taylor, David King, Israel Almendarez, Jesse Rodriguez, Sylvia Gajewski, Bruce Luerson and guests Joann Mendoza, Don Broussard and Terry Bohannon.
I. Pledge of Allegiance
II. Introduction of New Members and Visitors – No new members. Visitors introduced were Don Broussard and Terry Bohannon (prospective new member).
III. Minutes of 09 March 2010 meeting were approved.
IV. Committee Reports:
A. Membership (James Harvey) – the detachment has 35 life, 66 regular and 7 members in
arrears for a total membership of 108.
B. Finance (Ira Sewell) – The monthly cash financial report was presented. Total cash on hand and in banks less the family assistance fund was a net balance of $126,206.08 as of 03-31-2010.
C. Scholarships (Bob Richardson) – None.
D. Chaplain/Fallen Marine/Website (Ira Sewell) – There were Fallen Marine Programs held since the last meeting for Victor Parsons, Michael Halko Jr. and Jose S. Nunez. Ira also read a card from Iris Snipes expressing appreciation for Fallen Marine service for her husband, Bill Snipes (detachment member), who served in the Marines and fought in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.
E. Galveston County Fair/Rodeo 2010 (Israel Almendarez) – Operation dates will be April 09-17, 2010. Location is Jack Brooks Park, Hitchcock TX 77563. Website is www.galvestoncountyfair.com. For more information contact James Harvey or Israel Almendarez. Bruce Luerson stated that an additional weapon will be raffled at the rodeo, a Taurus stainless steel pistol. James Harvey made a motion to raffle the weapon for 250 tickets @ $10 each. Motioned seconded and carried.
F. Other Committee Reports – None.

V. Correspondence – None.
VI. Old Business – 1) Bruce Luerson asked that the detachment consider helping the La Marque JROTC send their cadets to leadership camp in late June 2010 with funds of up to $8,200. After discussion, it was decided that more information will have to be presented at future meetings before a decision can be made. 2) James Lewis stated that a trailer has been found to meet the needs of the detachment if the price is within the budget. More discussion on this at future meetings.
VII. New Business – 1) James Harvey made a motion that the detachment purchase a 9 cubic foot refrigerator, for $259, to be used at various events. Motion seconded and carried. 2) James Harvey made a motion that the following officers be nominated for the 2010-2011 year: a) Bob Richardson-Commandant; b) Guy Taylor-Vice Commandant; c) Art Vega-Jr Commandant; d) Bob Litwin-Paymaster; e) David King-Adjutant; f) Ed Mabry-Judge Advocate; g) Joe Vickery-Chaplain. Motion seconded and carried. 3) Art Vega presented the detachment with a fund request form to be used by individuals, families or organizations requesting funds. The form would be used to provide a written record of funds requested to be reviewed and voted on by detachment membership. More discussion on the form at future meetings. 4) Israel Almendarez made a motion to send flowers to Bob Litwin’s wife, Jo Beth. Motion seconded and carried. 5) Commandant Richardson stated that the awards dinner will be held at Mario’s Restorante, 2202 61st St, Galveston, TU 05/11, from 7:00-9:00 PM. David King made a motion to spend up to $2,000 for the dinner. Motion seconded and carried. 6) Art Vega stated that it would be nice to have business cards for detachment members. More discussion on this at future meetings.
VIII. For the Good of the Order – 1) Mary Denton stated that the Poolee Event has been re-scheduled to SA 04/24 at Baytown-Sterling High School in Baytown TX. Contact Mary or James Harvey for volunteer information. 2) Mary Denton stated that there are 2 events coming up to benefit Wounded Warriors: a) Warrior’s Weekend IV, May 21-22, 2010, Port O’Connor TX, www.warriorsweekend.org, this is a family oriented event designed to help soldiers and their families participate in activities that take their minds of their grueling rehabilitation and the struggles of their daily lives; b) Impact A Hero Weekend, June 5, 2010, Sugar Land TX, www.impactahero.org 3) Mary Bryant mentioned that she would bring in an old program from the MCL State Convention held in 1958 to be kept in the detachment archives.
