Meeting called to order
by Commandant Art Vega. Members in attendance were James Lewis, Jean Lewis, Ira Sewell, Guy Taylor, James Harvey, Linda Harvey, Bob Richardson, Hal Miller, Ed Ciavaglia, Gene Overbeck, Lewis Maston, Ivan Hammond, Bob Litwin, Mary Bryant, Mary Denton, Ronny Harper, Sylvia Gajewski, James Avant, James Carter, Joe Vickery, Frank Acosta, Alfredo Vera and Terry Lutz.
Pledge of Allegiance
Introduction of New Members and Visitors –
Visitor Wayne Redlin, from Wausau WI, was introduced. Wayne is interested in starting a new detachment back in Wausau and wanted to observe how Detachment #668 conducts business.
Minutes

Committee Reports:
A
. Membership (Bob Litwin) – The detachment has 36 life, 61 regular and 2 members in
arrears for a total membership of 99.
Finance
(Bob Litwin) – The monthly cash financial report was presented. Total cash on hand and in banks less the family assistance fund was a net balance of $226,596 as of 02-29-2012.
Scholarships
(Bob Litwin) – Application was submitted for Drew Holloman subject to review.
Chaplain/Fallen Marine
(Joe Vickery) – 3 Fallen Marine Programs were presented in the past month for Hector Ortiz (presented by Guy Taylor and Ronnie Mills), W. David Painter Jr. (presented by Joe Victory and Gene Overbeck) and Paul Davidson (home presentation by Joe Vickery).
Galveston County Fair/Rodeo 2012
(James Harvey) – Operation dates are 04/13—04/21/2012. Still need proof of insurance and health permit. James Lewis presented prices concerning popcorn sales. After additional discussion, it was decided that popcorn would be sold for $1.00 per box with an approximate cost of $0.25 per box.
Mardi Gras 2012
(Art Vega) – Commandant Vega stated that attendance was moderate due to cold/rainy weather. Gross sales were $14,331 less expenses of $11,269 = net income of $3,062. Mitchell Properties, owner of the buildings where Tina’s and the Admiralty are tenants, will require 2 million in liability limits on future events involving liquor sales. Commandant Vega stated that he would speak with Mitchell Properties to see if the liability limits can remain at 1 million.
Trustees/Officers
–1)Commandant Vega stated that officer nominating committee consists of Ivan Hammond, Bob Richardson, Guy Taylor, Terry Lutz and Lewis Maston. Officers will be voted on at the April meeting. Installation dinner will be on May 8th at Mario’s in Galveston. 2) Bob Litwin stated that 10 scholarships have been awarded and 5 Marines have been helped financially for various reasons since the first of the year. 3) After much discussion concerning financial requests for assistance, Joe Vickery made a motion to raise limits from $500 to $1,500 per individual request with no yearly limit, $2,000 limit per family request and $2,500 limit per organization request that officers/trustees may approve without approval from the quorum. Motion seconded and carried. 4) James Harvey stated that detachment member Alfredo Vera, a Wounded Warrior, requested closing costs of $3,000 on a new house he is purchasing on his own and up to $800 for a refrigerator. Alfredo is currently attending college and is 100% disabled. Officers approved these expenditures. Alfredo made a statement at the regular detachment meeting thanking members for their support.
Other Committee Reports – 1)
Bob Litwin stated that there will be a 4th of July parade for 2012 and Galveston expects the detachment to participate as usual. More details to follow at future meetings.
Correspondence –
A note was received from the family of Andrea Ciavaglia Kaiser, thanking the detachment for the donation sent in her memory to St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Community.
A letter was received from Ed Mabry (detachment member) stating that he no longer had an e-mail address and he also sent a donation to the detachment.
The Texas City Music Festival sent a request to the detachment for a proposal to sell beer at the festival. Dates will be 09/07—09/08/2012. Commandant Vega and Joe Vickery will check into this.
Old Business –
Mary Denton stated that the annual Poolee event staged by the area Marine recruiters will be held on Saturday, 03-24-2012 at the same location as before, Sterling High School in Baytown. Terry Lutz made a motion to disburse $1,000 to Mary for help in buying food and materials for the luncheon that will be served. Motion seconded and carried. Also, SSgt Melendez of the Baybrook Marine recruiters requested $600 to buy T-shirts for the event. This was approved by the officers/trustees at their meeting on 03-12-2012.
New Business

For the Good of the Order –
Joe Vickery requested that additional detachment members become participants in the Fallen Marine Program. After additional discussion, 6 members agreed to participant that don’t have uniforms. Joe made a motion for the detachment to purchase 7 additional uniforms (excluding trousers, shirt and shoes) to be loaned out. Motion seconded and carried.
On 03-01-2012, Commandant Vega visited Dick Cire (detachment member) in the hospital who has cancer. Continue to keep Dick in your prayers.
Commandant Vega stated that the Charles J. Sabatier memorial service will take place on Memorial Day, May 28th at the Moody Gardens Vietnam Memorial site starting at 10:30 a.m. A reception inside the hotel with food/drink will follow. Charles J. Sabatier ("Charlie"), an Army Spec. 4, who died in 2009 from health problems due to wounds he received during the First Tet Offensive will be the 76th man added to the Galveston County Vietnam Memorial at Moody Gardens. His family successfully petitioned for him to be added to the National Memorial (The Wall) – approved in 2011 - and so he has been also added to the Moody Gardens memorial. Moody Gardens will officially recognize/dedicate his elegant headstone, and his family will be coming from around the country for the event. Charlie was a Galveston boy and a 1964 graduate of Ball High School. All Marine Corps League members are invited and encouraged to attend and participate. Commandant Vega requested that as many detachment members attend as possible and wear your red blazer or red polo shirt as he would like for members to assemble together.
Next Meeting – 10 April 2012 (2nd Tuesday of every month).
