14 FEBRUARY 2012

 

Meeting called to order

by Commandant Art Vega. Members in attendance were James Lewis, Jean Lewis, Ira Sewell, Guy Taylor, James Harvey, Linda Harvey, Bob Richardson, Hal Miller, Ed Ciavaglia, Gene Overbeck, Lewis Maston, Ivan Hammond, Bob Litwin, Mary Bryant, Mary Denton and Leonard Baranski.

 

Pledge of Allegiance

Introduction of New Members and Visitors –

No new members or visitors were in attendance.

 Minutes of 10 January 2012 meeting was approved.

Committee Reports:

A. Membership (Bob Litwin) – The detachment has 36 life, 62 regular and 11 members inarrears for a total membership of 109.

Finance

(Bob Litwin) – The monthly cash financial report was presented. Total cash on hand and in banks less the family assistance fund was a net balance of $260,468 as of 01-31-2012.

Scholarships

(Bob Litwin) – Applications were submitted for Kelsea Ciavaglia, Lane Mark Ciavaglia and Addision Ciavaglia, grandchildren of Ed Ciavaglia. Bob Litwin made a motion that they each receive $1,000 for the spring semester. Motion seconded and carried.

Chaplain/Fallen Marine

(Art Vega) – 1 Fallen Marine Program was presented in the past month for James Robert Wilson (presented by Bob Litwin, Ed Ciavaglia and Ivan Hammond).

Galveston County Fair/Rodeo 2012

(James Harvey) – Operation dates are 04/13—04/21/2012. No new updates this month.

Mardi Gras 2012

(Art Vega) – Operation dates are 02/10—02/21/2012. Commandant Vega stated that attendance was moderate the first weekend due to cold/rainy weather. Net revenues were not available. Bob Litwin stated that Mitchell Properties, owner of the buildings where Tina’s and the Admiralty are tenants, will require 2 million in liability limits on future events involving liquor sales. Commandant Vega stated that he would speak with Mitchell Properties to see if the liability limits can remain at 1 million.

Trustees/Officers

– None.

Other Committee Reports -

None.

?Correspondence –

A letter was received from University of Houston Scholarships and Financial Aid Office acknowledging receipt of $1,000 scholarship for Kaitlin Anderson.

A letter was received from Annie Burton, President of the Board of Trustees of La Marque ISD, thanking the detachment for the donation to the La Marque High School ROTC program.

 

Old Business –

Commandant Vega stated that he did not get a consensus from detachment members for a cap patch design as there were varying preferences. James and Jean Lewis will be reimbursed for any caps they have paid for.

Commandant Vega stated that the house that BABA (Bay Area Builders Association) has completed for the Woods family was dedicated in a ceremony today and the detachment presented a check for $30,000 as previously approved. Detachment members in attendance were Bob Litwin (Jo Beth), Art Vega, Ivan Hammond, James Harvey, James Lewis (Jean), Gene Overbeck, Lewis Maston and Guy Taylor. Several pictures were taken for publishing in Semper Fi magazine at a later date.

Guy Taylor stated that the detachment phone line has been installed and is operating. New number is (409) 770-0477.

New Business

Mary Denton stated that the annual Poolee event staged by the area Marine recruiters will be held on Saturday, 03-24-2012 at the same location as before, Sterling High School in Baytown. Mary stated they expect to feed approximately 1,500 including recruits and their families and needs lots of volunteers to help. Start time for set up will be 8:30 AM. More discussion will follow at the March meeting concerning funding for this event.

Bob Richardson stated that Mary Denton was out of pocket $329 for the 2011 Poolee event. Ivan Hammond made a motion for the detachment to reimburse Mary for this amount. Motion seconded and carried.

Commandant Vega stated that the detachment has received a request from the Marine Corps Coordinating Council for funds in the amount of $5,000 to expand community knowledge of the Marine Corps and all associated organizations so Marines know where to go to get help. After additional discussion, Bob Richardson made a motion to expend $2,500 for the Council. Motion seconded and carried.

For the Good of the Order –

James Harvey stated that a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Houston will be held in Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston on 03-03-2012 @ 2:00 PM.

 

Next Meeting – 13 March 2012 (2nd Tuesday of every month).
